Evolving Faith: Meaning, Ethics, and Ideas
Monday, November 16, 2009 @ 7:00 p.m., reception at 6:00 p.m.

Come join us as Interfaith Youth Core founder Eboo Patel sits down for a conversation with Krista Tippett, the host of public radio's Speaking of Faith. How does she answer the kinds of questions she asks of others?  And how has her sense of the creative dialogue between belief and non-belief in modern life changed?

Beginning at 6:00 p.m., enjoy a pre-Thanksgiving reception and participate in assisting poet/collage artist Krista Franklin lay the foundation for a mixed-media collage entitled “Speaking of Faith.” Guests will be provided a small piece of paper to write one word or phrase that articulates their definition of faith. These writings will serve as the base for a larger mixed-media collage that Franklin will create to commemorate the evening.

Then join us for the main event: As a radio host, Tippett takes on thought-provoking subjects, interviewing wise thinkers and activists, asking new questions of old debates and creating a space for fresh thinking and real conversation. At this event, the tables will be turned: Patel will lead the discussion, asking Tippett the types of questions she usually poses to her guests and exploring the surprises and discoveries she has made as religion has moved from the sidelines to the forefront of world affairs.

“I’m fascinated,” Tippett says, “in how insights we call ‘religious’ or ‘spiritual’ find expression in every area of life – from work to parenting, from television to quantum physics.  I am thrilled by the creative interplay I find across supposed dividing lines – science versus religion, for example – on the hardest and most interesting issues before us.”

The first stop on a national tour, this event will undoubtably be a special evening.

Additional information:

Speaking of Faith is the national and global conversation about religion, meaning, ethics and ideas, using in-depth conversations as a guide to ask life's biggest questions: What does it mean to be human? How do I find meaning in a rapidly changing, complex world? Selected for broadcasting and the internet's highest honors, including a Peabody and two unprecedented Webbys, Speaking of Faith engages its listeners in an adventurous exploration of the meaning of life and belief in its many secular and religious forms, through literature, science, philosophy, popular culture, and personal history.

Heard on over 225 public radio stations, and by a rapidly growing audience of podcasters, Speaking of Faith is an innovator among public radio programs helping their audience engage meaningfully with the program through the internet, podcasting, and live public events. Chicago Public Radio is pleased to partner with the show to produce this special event.

This event is also taking place as part of Michigan Avenue Forums at Fourth Presbyterian Church, which work to promote civic formation within the Chicagoland community by presenting a series of events that feature important thinkers and public leaders in live lecture or debate format, discussing current issues of civic and ethical priority.
