A 10-week-old strike by toolmakers on Chicago’s Southwest Side is ending in what their union is calling a victory.
Teamsters Local 743 says its members at SK Hand Tool Corp. voted nearly three-to-one to approve a new union contract with the company.
This means about 70 strikers will start returning to work Monday.
The strike began August 25 after the struggling company dropped health insurance without the union’s approval.
The contract restores insurance.
The union says it also allows pay cuts of up to 30 percent.
BERG: We’re going to give the company the chance to turn themselves around.
Richard Berg is Local 743 president.
BERG: If they succeed, we expect to bring the standard of living back up to where it was in wages as well.
SK makes sockets and wrenches for Sears’ Craftsman line.
The company didn’t return our calls for comment Wednesday.
The union says that, although most of the strikers will be back on the job next week, those with less seniority will have to wait for SK business to pick up.
