Preservation Group Offers Alternate Plan for Reese Campus

A state-wide preservation group has a new plan to save some buildings at Chicago's Michael Reese hospital. City officials want the property for an Olympic Village if they win the 2016 Games.

The city plans to tear down all but one of the buildings, including eight that famed Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius helped design. Now Landmarks Illinois proposes reusing four of the Gropius buildings and a few others. President Jim Peters says the group looked at which buildings are most adaptable and would still meet Olympic housing needs.

PETERS: We believe, and a number of people believe, there are some significant buildings on the campus and that because of how quickly the Olympic Village plan was put together, they may not have gotten the consideration they deserve to see if they're reusable.

Peters says developers could get tax credits for adapting the buildings.

A Chicago 2016 spokeswoman says demolition plans haven't changed. But she says it's "highly unlikely" the buildings will come down before the October decision on who gets the Games.
