90 Years After Chicago’s Red Summer of 1919

Ninety years ago today, folks in cities, big and small, across the country had had enough of bad housing, job inequality and racism. On this day in Chicago in 1919, tensions boiled over and race riots left many dead. While it wasn’t the deadliest riot, Chicago’s was one of the most notorious of that Red Summer. Bill Tuttle, a professor emeritus at University of Kansas, wrote the book Race Riot: Chicago in the Red Summer of 1919 about those tensions, many of which remain.
