Record high oil prices are putting the crunch on Chicago area drivers, and causing some problems for local air travelers.
Chicago-based United is again raising its fuel surcharge. But the company might have to call it off if other airlines don't do the same, says David Field of Airline Business magazine.
FIELD: An airline will often refuse to go along with a fare hike that's made by another airline. They do it in part, because they see consumers resisting.
Especially true during rough economic times like these, Field says.
Another airline, ATA, says those high fuel prices have forced it to completely stop serving Chicago's Midway Airport.
FIELD: Everyone suffers from fuel, but weak carriers suffer more, and ATA has been a weak carrier for some time.
ATA will halt domestic flights out of Midway next month, and its trips to Mexico in June.
