Mass transit officials are once again urging lawmakers to increase funding to avoid service cuts. Stephen Schlickman heads the Regional Transportation Authority. He called on lawmakers to hike the sales tax a quarter percent across the region.
Schlickman says without additional funding, the transit agencies will have to slash bus and train service.
SCHLICKMAN: If we do not have a long-term solution, both for capital and operating, our transit system is in a downward spiral. This is not the type of transit city a world-class city deserves. We will become a second-rate city if this were to happen.
Schlickman also called for billions more in capitol improvements he says local agencies have had to defer for years. Transit officials spoke before the Illinois House Mass Transit Committee today.
The Chicago Transit Authority is expected to unveil even more severe cuts in service, if there's no new funding.
