The Power of 122 Votes

The Chicago Board of Elections says the 32nd ward has elected a new alderman...by only 122 votes.

Democrat Scott Waguespack will preside over an area that includes parts of Bucktown, Roscoe Village, and Ukrainian Village.

WAGUESPACK: It gives us a mandate to bring change to the ward, to be more accountable to the people here in the ward, to make sure that we're more responsive overall. And those are the things that people wanted for change. We can do that.

Waguespack beat out 9-year alderman Ted Matlak.

That's despite Matlak's support from powerful Democrats including Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Matlak has not yet conceded the race.

Scott Waguespack formerly worked for the mayor of Berwyn.
